On Tuesday 22nd November 2022, a small group of Rivermead Learners attended an NHS Careers event which was organised by Medway Community Healthcare and MEBP at Lordswood Leisure Centre.
Attending the event was other schools such as St John Fisher, Rochester Grammar and Thomas Aveling. The learners we took were ones that specified an interest in Healthcare related roles and we all had a brilliant day. The event did what it was designed to do which was to inspire young people about careers in healthcare and get them thinking about all of the different jobs and specialisms they could do. There were 9 stall holders and we rotated around to each one as they became available. We learnt so much including;
Occupational Therapy - Experience stroke impairments whilst making a drink
Nursing - Meeting Vivian (Lifecast training mannequin)
Hand held ECG readers, heart models and sats probes - we also did some bandaging on each other and some of the learners packed out some pretend bed sores on a dummy and bandaged the wound up with some learners taking to it very naturally).
Taking pulses
NHS Careers quiz
Nutrition - different consistencies of fluids
There were other stalls including dentistry.
It was so nice to see the learners find out about different career paths and the NHS Careers quiz sparked some conversation about this.
We will hopefully be attending more events like this in the future for any other learners who might be interested in this sector.
