Meet the UK’s oldest apprentice, a 78-year-old rail worker: ‘While I’m able, I’ll keep going’

Many people associate apprenticeships with young people, but there is no upper age limit

Bob Bryce may have left school over 60 years ago, but it hasn’t stopped him from completing an apprenticeship at the age of 78.

The passenger host – or ticket inspector – and team leader on Govia Thameslink Railway is likely the country’s oldest apprentice.

Having left school without O-Levels, he first needed to study for his GCSEs in English and Maths to be able to do the scheme. Even now, he has no plans to retire.
